During September 2017 I attended a Mediherb Seminar called “Women’s Health and Hormones – The delicate balance”. Angela gave an overview of the balance of female hormones, hormonal testing, common reproductive conditions, PCOS, ovulation, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Specifically how herbal medicine and lifestyle can help support that very delicate hormonal balance.
The highlight of the day for me was the results of A new clinical trial which showed that lifestyle and herbal medicine is effective in the treatment of PCOS.
“We conducted a randomised controlled trial over three months to determine the clinical effectiveness of combining a herbal medicine treatment with a lifestyle intervention, compared with lifestyle alone for improved menstrual regularity in overweight women with PCOS,” said Dr Arentz.
PCOS symptoms include menstural irregularity, high levels of testosterone, difficulties with fertility, weight gain, metabolic disorders and polycystic ovaries.
Here is a brief summary of the outcomes from the Clinical trial
Compared to controls ( lifestyle intervention only) the treatment group had improvements in:
- Bodyweight,BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure.
- Quality of life
- Depression, anxiety and stress scores
- LH, insulin
- Reduction in oligomenorrhoea of 32.9% ( that meant regular periods for 1/3)
- Pregnancy rates were significantly higher ( 11 fell pregnant compared to 3 in control group)
So it is wonderful to share the latest clinical trial with you and know that herbal medicine and lifestyle can support that delicate hormonal balance and so much more.
